Art has been around for thousands of years and it’s an amazing way to express your emotions to everyone around the world. Years before people used cave walls as their canvases. You don’t just need paper and pencil there are so many other ways to make art.

Hanbin Yu ‘22 has been doing art since she can remember but didn’t start getting into it until sixth grade.  Yu is self-taught and continues to learn. Yu says, “In sixth grade, I started to look for videos to help me improve.”

Artists can be inspired by many things from what a flower would be like when it’s withering away to a portrait of a person you saw reading a book. Inspiration comes from all around no matter what it is.

She says, “What inspires me the most is my mood or music, as my mood or a song I listen to changes so do my drawings.”  Art shows emotions which is what makes it so passionate.

She adds, “I always listen to music when I do my art, and most of the time that’s what changes my art as I progress.”

“The fact that I can make a profit from doing something I love is amazing to me, while others go out and get part-time jobs I can make money off of doing something I love,” she says. Being an artist isn’t something small.

An artist has a chance of getting older and making money off of something they love to do. They can live their life off of something they might have randomly started and got good art. All they do is put their emotions on a canvas and people love it just as much as the artist.

People pay thousands of dollars for paintings and beautiful art from famous people. What won’t they pay for anyone else’s art?

Yu added, “Art is something that makes me feel productive even if it’s not education-related.”

There is no such thing as perfect but Yu says, “Perfect is not when other people think the art is perfect, but when the artist themselves think it’s perfect.”
