I am Savannah Medina, I am class of 2026 and I write for the sports section. I mostly write post games about how the team did on their games and how they felt about it, I also do spot lights on one main person if they do really good then I write a story on how they felt personally about it. My work is important because I talk about what happened during the game and what happened after, letting the readers know what happened if they couldn't be there. Being apart of the Red wood Gigantea makes me proud in many different ways, I am especially proud of getting out of my comfort zone, being able to go and talk to random students about how they did and not feel as nervous about it as I was before.
Semester 1 Stories
What Is In Coach Sharton’s Bag?
People always stay wondering why Coach Sharton always carries his back pack and why does he need it everywhere he goes, in this story we asked a few football players of his what they think is in the bag and why does he always constantly carry it around, then went to coach Sharton and asked for the final answer. In this story it shows one of my skills by proving I can talk to students just as well as I can adults.
This story matters because watching the football games from home or in person you can constantly see this bag always on his back but why? This informs Redwood students, parents, staff why he needs this on him at all times.
What is going on with the gym?
In this story, we talk about what has been happening to the gym. Why don't we have our gym right now? What are they improving? What's gonna be improved in this new coming gym?
Photogallery: Men’s Varsity Soccer 11.18.2022
This is a photogallery I created for this year's first men's home soccer game. It was against Lindsay and it was a really intense game. The Lindsay team was really strong and aggressive. The final score was 3-1 and Redwood won. This show my strong sports photographer skills. I am pretty good at shooting a game and building a gallery to share.
This story matters because soccer doesn't draw the same kinds of crowds that other sports get. By highlighting the soccer teams with my camera, I am connecting our readers to our diverse, talented athletes and showing a part of RHS athletic life that not many people see.
Reflection
Where have I been?
Coming into my freshmen year I was excited to pick my classes, when my mom told me that I had no choice but to pick Journalism for first period I got kind of upset, when hearing journalism I thought it was going to be writing in a notebook and putting stickers in it to make it look " cute" and " exciting". I was NOT excited for this class, but when I joined it was so much different from what I expected. After being in this class for a couple months it has become my favorite class and makes me excited to come to first period.
Where am I now?
Being apart of journalism has helped me improve things I can use outside of this class as well. Now I can make eye contact with someone without feeling uncomfortable or scared. Now I can feel confident enough to talk to someone I don't know on campus. I am improving my stories from my first one til now, I learn things I could've done better and can do better next time.
Where am I going?
Moving forward into this next semester I want to be even more confident to go out and interview people by myself because I can go do it with someone but going by myself still scares me and I hope by the end of the next semester that I can move forward from that. Another thing I wish to work on is getting my stories done and out faster because sometimes it could take me two weeks to get one done, and that's because I get so side tracked. Something I want to work on for my section would be going along with the last one and kind of getting more stories out in shorter time but still making the time to make sure they are still good stories.
