Redwood High School’s new Cinema Club brings students together through movies, film discussions, and a shared appreciation for cinema.

Cinema dates back to 1895. The first movie projector was invented by Auguste and Louis Lumière. Not long after, workers leaving the Lumière Factory was released, becoming the first movie.

Cinema is a powerful art form that reflects human nature and is what connects people all around the globe. It’s no secret that cinema isn’t as big as it used to be, but the students of Redwood High School aren’t letting that get in their way.

Redwood’s Cinema Club is an opportunity to watch movies and learn from them. The club is run by Camryn Lewis ’27 as the president, Haley Tierce ’27 as the vice president, Justin Valdez ’27 as the secretary, and Greer Olson ’27 as the treasurer.

Lewis and Tierce bonded over film, compelling them to start Cinema Club. Lewis said, “We don’t have all the details figured out yet.” She is hoping for this club to go big, knowing it’s a great club with a great purpose and great message.

Tierce claims that the purpose of this club is to bring cinema to unite people, break away from the stress of school, and to find representation through film.

Justin Valdez ’27 is in charge of keeping track of what is talked about in meetings. He says that the club will host movie days twice a month. They are leaning more towards Saturdays; however, having them at school or out is not yet decided. For now, the club will host in the quad.

Greer Olson ’27 is the treasurer of the club, in charge of finance, food, locations, and social media. The reason she’s in this club is to stand for representation and the importance of showing people that they matter. Olsen said, “In media, it’s sometimes lonely if you’re like going through something and no one else sees it in a place where there are really two demographics of people.”

The first meeting was held on September 14th. Olson says that the number of people that showed up exceeded her expectations. The meeting had a good turnout for voting on a movie that is coming up the weekend after Hoco.

Although being a new club, the club’s team consists of only seniors, which begs the question: what will happen with the club moving into next year? The hopes to hold meetings that will bring more people into the club to hold their legacy. Olson said that she’s hoping the impact of the club will last.

Juniors and underclassmen will be offered the opportunity to take up leadership of the club moving on to next year.

Cinema Club meetings are held on September 15 during lunch, and they’ve decided on the two movies they will host. The movies will be 2012 “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and 2026 “Project Hail Mary”.

Regardless of who you are, we are all united by the cinema. Cinema Club is an opportunity for the students at Redwood to share their love for movies, to learn from them, and overall have a good time.
