If you’re looking for something to do this summer that isn’t just melting in the Visalia heat or doomscrolling on your couch, Arts Visalia has an option that’s actually pretty cool.

Their Young at Art Summer Program is running now through the end of July and offers week-long art classes for anyone ages 5–17. That includes high school students—and yes, that includes you, even if you haven’t taken art since freshman year.

Classes are taught by real local artists and cover everything from clay sculpture and printmaking to painting, drawing, and even wearable art. One week you might be making a puppet. Another, you’re designing your own jewelry or building a surrealist collage. Each age group gets its own time slot, so you’ll be with people your age—not stuck painting next to someone who just learned how to tie their shoes.

The best part? Everything you make gets shown off in an official gallery exhibit in August—and some of it is even for sale. You could go from doodling in the margins of your Chem notes to having your art on display in downtown Visalia.

Each class costs $100, but there are partial and full scholarships available. Signing up is super simple: head to artsvisalia.org, pick your classes, and if you need help with the cost, you can adjust it in the checkout screen. Or, if you’re more of an in-person type, you can stop by the gallery on Oak Ave.

Arts Visalia is located at 214 E Oak Ave. Classes run through July 25. The big exhibition opens in August.

So if your summer plans are looking a little dry, this might be the splash of creativity you didn’t know you needed.

Imagine spending your days talking about ideas that you love with people you genuinely care about. Not bad, that. I advise some journalists and teach some literature at Redwood High School in Visalia, Ca.
