Katy Robles, ‘25, has been in drama since freshman year but only started performing in plays and musicals in her sophomore year.
Robles plays Ursula in the musical The Little Mermaid. She says, “Ursula is just really evil, bitter, and jealous of her family because they hate her and took everything from her.”
Although Robles enjoys playing Ursula she says, “A challenging part of playing Ursula is just vocally. It’s a really straining part and I mean my voice gets tired so it’s difficult to get fully into character and go full out.”
Robles says she thinks everyone can relate to Ursula because of that feeling of being pushed aside and just being disrespected which is really a universal feeling that most can relate to.
To try to get into character Robles tries to understand the meaning of all her lines. She tries to really embody the character and get the emotions to really show when performing.
Being a senior means this is Robles’s last musical at Redwood. She says, “I obviously want to put on a good show for everybody, but I also want to have a really good show with people backstage and just enjoy the moment with all of my friends.”
Robles enjoys drama and performing in front of others and although this is her last musical in her high school career she hopes to continue in college, which is why she applied to colleges with theater in mind.
“It’s honestly just a very bittersweet moment because it’s such an amazing show to end off with. It’s been a really fun program and I really like all of the people, and of course, I really like Galvan so I’m definitely gonna miss it.”
To see Robles perform as Ursula, come see the musical at the LJ William Theater on January 23, 24, and 25 at 7 pm. January 25, also has a 2 pm showing. Tickets can be purchased here.
