The U.S. Department of Education [USDE] recently announced that Free Application for Federal Student Aid [FAFSA] forms would begin to be processed in the first half of March 2024.

The FAFSA typically opens on October 1, with colleges starting to receive student information shortly after. Due to delays in the simplification process, the form opened in late December 2023.

The USDE initially told financial aid administrators that they would begin receiving the information by the end of January 2024. That date has now been pushed two months.

In an article titled “Letter on FAFSA Rollout and Delays,” the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators [NASFAA] President Justin Drager and National Chair Helen Faith write, “The future will undoubtedly contain conversations about rollout shortcomings and program oversight, but for now, our sole focus as higher education professionals must be to shield students and families from the negative outcomes of these delays. “
