Freshmen are encouraged to elect representatives for their class and engage in civic processes before adulthood.

With the rapid approach of Redwood’s Freshman Elections on September 20th, 2024, many freshmen may wonder: why vote?

Voting for Freshman President and Vice President commences soon, and freshmen are largely encouraged to participate in determining the future representatives of their class.

Class representatives are important for both our society here at Redwood and for the freshmen whose voices will be heard through them. By electing a candidate, students can impact the future of the current school year. Freshman President and Vice President determine how freshmen will be included in school activities. By advocating for their favorite contenders, freshmen can further immerse themselves into Redwood’s community.

Appointing a President and Vice President not only poses as a first step into the population but also engages students in civic processes before adulthood. The procedure prepares young people for advising future leaders of our country and helps them grow civic-minded.

Mr. Eskridge, Redwood High School’s Civics teacher, says it’s important “in high school to be exposed to that process that hopefully, later on, they’re actively engaged in.”

“Again, I think that it just teaches them to be participatory in the government. I mean, a representative who is obviously what we need. We need someone to be active and engage and participate and to hopefully be well informed.” Mr. Eskridge says, “It gives them opportunities.”

Election day is on Friday, September 20th, 2024.
