A game that many students haven’t thought about in years is suddenly everywhere again. Tomodachi Life, originally released on the Nintendo 3DS, is gaining attention as clips of its funny and unpredictable gameplay spread across social media. As more students buy the game, many feel pressured to get it as well.
Much of the hype is being fueled by social media, especially TikTok, where short clips of the game’s funniest and dramatic moments are spreading fast. “Social media does an excellent job of influencing the popularity of Tomodachi Life by promoting it online,” said Zoey Lovegren, ’28. “I want Tomodachi Life so badly, I feel like I’m going insane,” Lovegren says.
These video clips often show off the game’s most chaotic features, such as random relationships, personalized Mii’s, and hand-drawn faces. Natalie Tadros, ’28, claims that these moments are exactly what pulled her in. “I see them making characters on social media, and they get married and do stuff, and it’s really funny,” Tadros says.
She explained that compared to other simulation games, “it’s just cuter, and allows so much creativity to the point where your island can be as weird as you want.”
The amount of creativity and chaos the game allows is what makes Tomodachi Life stand out. While other life simulation games can feel controlled or repetitive.
Joslyn Dandon, ’27, says that the games randomness and personalization are what keep people watching and wanting to play, “It’s really different from other games and super fun to watch or play.” Dandon says, “My friends’ characters always do something weird out of nowhere.”
At the same time, the game taps into students’ nostalgia. Many students remember playing it on the Nintendo 3DS when they were younger. Seeing it again sparks interest in the remake for those who had the original. “It also feels nostalgic… seeing clips on TikTok makes me want to play it again,” Dandon says.
With the game’s mix of humor, creativity, and nostalgia, Tomodachi Life has renewed its popularity and created a new audience while reconnecting with old fans. Whether students are finding this game for the first time or revisiting it, the growing interest shows how quickly a game can surface when it’s hyped.
