On Thursday, April 8th, Redwood varsity women’s soccer team was scheduled to play Lemoore High School. Due to conflict with officiators, Lemoore had to cancel the game and reschedule the game for a later date, April 19th.

Varsity head coach Jason Vieira says, “ Lemoore was unable to get the officials for the game…. we have a limited amount of people in the Valley that actually officiate soccer games.” Due to the inconvenience, the varsity girls will have to play 3 games in the span of one week.

Vieira says, “It is a little bit more grueling for the girls because 3 games in 4 days is a lot.  But we’ll be ready.” The varsity women’s soccer team is no stranger to a change due to the circumstances of their season. With many restrictions and constantly changing rules, the girls are ready to face and overcome any obstacles set in their way.

“…..the girls are ready for this type of stuff.  We know this season is going to be different, so we’re prepared for the unexpected changes.”

Soccer game cancellations are usually extremely rare. The last cancellation the team has faced was around 8 years ago. Due to Covid, the numbers of officiators in the Valley this soccer season has dropped. With little numbers of officiators, it’s expected that their will be soccer game cancellations throughout the valley.

Paityn Bruce 24′ says, “When the game was canceled I was obviously upset because I really was looking forward to playing but me and all my teammates knew that we just had to work harder at practice and let our hard work transfer into the next game.” Due to the game cancellation the girl’s got an extra day of practice last Thursday. Tuesday’s and Thursday’s usually are game day’s for the varsity team. Bruce says, “With the extra day of practice last week, I feel very confident going into our game on Tuesday.”

The next varsity women’s soccer game is on Tuesday, April 13th against Golden West High School at Redwood.
