On August 27th Redwood Students met at the Mineral King bowl for the rally, ASB announced the top ten homecoming nominees. Here’s the insight of the top five Homecoming queen nominees and their thoughts on this upcoming week. 

Kaitlyn White

Homecoming nominee Kaitlyn White ‘23 was nominated by the French club. Her first reaction towards her name being called was pure shock.

“I thought it was a joke for like five seconds until my friends kept hitting me telling me to stand up,” says White. 

Homecoming Week puts the spotlight on the nominees giving them the opportunity to really get involved and step out of their comfort zones. 

“It’s just such a new thing,  I’ve never been so out there that much in my life and this week will be the most I will ever be in my entire life,” says White

Lexi Ellis

Homecoming queen nominee Lexi Ellis ‘23 was nominated by ASB. Ellis is really looking forward to this week.

“I’m so excited for all the lunch time activities, getting involved, and getting the opportunity to meet all the new freshmen and sophomores on campus,” says Ellis.

Ellis was overwhelmed with excitement when her name was announced. “  I was not expecting it at all, I was the last person whose name was called. I was shaking and so excited! “

One thing that you may not know about this nominee is that she is a makeup artist in her free time. “ I do a lot of makeup for kids for events like prom and weddings. I’m also learning how to do nails,” says Ellis.

Ellis says, “ I feel so happy that this early on in the year I got so many students to support and vote for me.

Jessica Shupe

Homecoming queen nominee, Jessica Shupe ‘23, was nominated by Redwood’s Chamber Orchestra. 

Shupe has been in Orchestra for all four years of highschool and has also started a book club here at Redwood.

When Shupe’s name was announced she says, “I was surprised and kind of in denial. I thought there was another Jessica nominated.” 

Shupe shares her excitement for seeing this year’s court. She says, “To be honest it made me really happy to see all the women of color who got nominated this year because we don’t often see that.”

Sierra Nelson

Sierra Nelson ‘23 was another homecoming queen nominee nominated by Track and Field. 

Hoco Rally 2022. Redwood hosts its homecoming rally on the track on 8.29.22.

Nelson shares her feelings about the week so far and every day leading up to the big game on Friday. She says, “I’m really excited. This week has been so fun so far so I can’t wait to see what happens on Friday.”

When asked how it felt to hear her name be announced, Nelson says,”I was pretty shocked, I didn’t expect to get nominated but I was excited.”

Heading into the rest of the week she says, “I’m most excited for the parade. I’m going to ride in the parade with Ambrose [homecoming king nominee], I think it’ll be funny”

To get to know the nominees better Nelson shares, “If people are looking for me they look for my hair or my laugh.”

Mira Daya

Mira Daya ‘23, homecoming queen nominee, was nominated by Yearbook. Daya is a 3 year member of Yearbook, President of FCCLA, Vice President of FHP and a part of ASB here at Redwood. 

She expresses her feelings of joy when hearing her name be announced. Daya says, “It feels really good, I was definitely not expecting this but I feel like it’s one of the highlights of the past 4 years.”

She says, “I was genuinely surprised because I just finished speaking my line in the rally. I wasn’t expecting the 2nd nominee to be called so soon. When I heard it was my name I was shocked.”

The remainder of the week has many exciting events to come. Daya says, “I am most excited about making the shirts and campaigning because it’s really fun to incorporate your friends.”
