Kylen Gray, ’22 and Aidan Hatch, ’22 have taken it upon themselves to start up something fun while distance learning.

Some of you may know Gray from some of his popular roles in Redwood’s Theatre performances along with Chamber Choir, and some of you may know Hatch from our very own Redwood Gigantea, as he is on staff, and he is also a part of Chamber Choir with Gray.

With these musical backgrounds, Gray and Hatch decided to start up their own band, “Pretty Boys” where it hopefully will become more serious as the future goes.

Gray and Hatch have known each other since elementary school, as they were in band together as well as choir, then continued through middle school.

“I am super lucky to have an opportunity like this. I’m also really excited to be able to play music with someone I’ve been friends with since the third grade.”

They both played the piano and drums, however, Hatch also started to play a little with a bass guitar. Now in their band, Hatch is focusing more on playing the bass guitar and Gray with an electric guitar as well as both of them sing. They both plan on singing together and separate on different songs.

According to Hatch, it was Gray’s ideas to start up the band. Gray says, “I’ve been wanting to do this for a really long time, and tried to get into some other bands in high school (student-formed) and I just was never able to…”.

Hatch says he talked to Gray about him purchasing a bass guitar, and Gray jumped on the idea of starting a band and Hatch was immediately on board.

Gray and Hatch have only had one official practice together. Due to Covid, they usually meet over FaceTime and riff off of each other.

On January 30th, Gray went over to Hatch’s house and they had a social distanced practice in his garage. They even created the beginning to a song through an app called “Ableton”.

Right now, this band is more of a hobby for the two, however, once Covid is over, they both plan on becoming more serious. They want to play at different establishments downtown such as Cafe 210. Gray says, “I personally would like to go all the way, but at the end of the day it’s supposed to be fun.”

“I’m really excited to jam with someone as cool as Aidan at like a restaurant venue or something, or just make music in his garage.”

Hatch categorized their style of music as Pop, but he would like to explore multiple other genres of music.

Gray and Hatch are thinking about possibly adding their friend, Chris Sorhabi, ’22 to the band as he is also really into music. Gray says they might be adding a drummer, but nothing is set in stone yet.

Keep an eye out once Covid is over, “Pretty Boys” might be taking their band to the next step and playing at local businesses downtown!
