Coming off of winning the WYL championship, the Redwood girls tennis team just won two consecutive valley championships. Most people would think this is a crazy rare occurrence, but this is the second time this team has done it. In 1975 and 1976, the girls tennis team won back to back valley championships.
The Rangers swept the second seeded Sanger team 9-0 in both singles and doubles. The heart of the team, Claire Yang, continued to show out as she led the team with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and also claimed a victory doubles with Elizabeth Gormley with an 8-4 score line in doubles.
Yang, ’19, has been on varsity all four years. She was very excited that she got to be a part of the team that won the Valley back to back again. “It feels great because we’re bringing back a tradition that happened almost 40 years ago.” Being a varsity player since the beginning has helped her with the stress of playing in matches and being the number one player. When they won Valley Championship, Yang said she was with most of her teammates when they realized they had won. “We all hugged each other and we were freaking out.” Yang is extremely happy that her high school career of tennis
The younger Ranger girls fell in line with her not losing a single match in singles, or doubles. Maddie Adams, ’21, says that hard work got them here and putting everything on the line won them the ring. She does pay homage to Claire Yang saying that, “[Claire] was a huge key to our success, but I think we can still win as long as we work for it.” Maddie believes that next year looks as bright as this one.
Elizabeth Gormley and Maddie both agree that they have all learned not to give up. As a team they have achieved the incredible and us Rangers hope to make it a three-peat next year.
