As the fall season settles in and the school year reaches its midpoint, one important event stands out as the highlight of October for Redwood Rangers.
The 70th annual Cowhide game.
Students have been eagerly awaiting Cowhide Week to begin, from the colorful costumes to anxiously watching how Redwood High School’s team performs. There are many different perspectives on what students are most excited about when it comes to cowhide.
This October, Cowhide will take place on October 31st, also Halloween.
With a variety of events in store, it’s without a doubt that students on campus are thrilled to celebrate Cowhide.
Cowhide fans give insight into what they’re looking forward to in this upcoming game.
Itzel Abrego Cortes, ’27, says, “I’m really looking forward to cowhide. I’d say out of all the games, football has been the one I’ve watched the most when it comes to Redwood sports. I think the energy level during cowhide season is just unmatched compared to other events. So I’m really looking forward to this year’s game.”

Abrego Cortes’ excitement is affected by the growing anticipation among many Redwood students who see Cowhide as more than just a football game.
It’s a celebration of ranger pride and community spirit.
Zoey Gonzales, ’28, says “I’m planning on going to Cowhide with my friends this year, so I’m really excited about that.” I also like seeing what dress-up days are planned for Cowhide Week. I try to dress up for a few occasions, depending on the event. But besides that, I would say I look forward to the rally. I’m taking dance this year, so I’m really excited to see what the dance force has prepared.”
Like Gonzales, many students look forward to the weeklong festivities that surround the game from events that showcase Redwood’s performing arts and sports teams.

These events help build anticipation and unite students in celebration of the big night.
Xavier Legaspi, ’27, a member of ASB, is a devoted cowhide enthusiast and has gone to the cowhide game each year since his freshman year.
When asked about what he is most looking forward to, he said, “I am looking forward to all the school spirit in the student section at the game. This year is the 70th game, so it is definitely a big game!

Legaspi shares what activities ASB has planned throughout Cowhide Week. “We have many fun activities going on this week, like the Lunch Time Activities every day in the quad. We also have the school face off at Taylor’s hot dogs, which has been a tradition for many years. One more activity we have is the Cowhide Carnival, which takes place on Friday in the quad, which will involve vendors and clubs on campus!”
As Cowhide approaches, the excitement across Redwood High continues to build.
From spirited rallies and dress-up day themes to the highly anticipated game on Halloween night, students and staff are ready to honor a long-standing tradition that brings the entire community together.
With this year marking Cowhide’s 70th anniversary, the celebration promises to be one filled with pride, unity, and unforgettable memories.
