Unfortunately, some people don’t follow this idea…
On Monday the 4th of November, Redwood was given back the hide. It took them two long years, but the wait was finally over. Many people, including myself, were looking forward to seeing Mt. Whitney and their representatives give us back the hide, but we were disappointed when the school was a no-show. Redwood coaches carried The ‘Hide through those gym doors instead of the ambassadors from Mt Whitney
Keep in mind, I’m trying to keep my judgement of the school as fair as possible. But the thing that makes this whole thing irritating is that the tradition is for the loser to walk into the opposing school’s gym, and hand back the hide.
Now that tradition is broken.
And that is unfortunate. Going into Cowhide, cracks began to show in Mt Whitney’s school spirit. Players were quitting and they had to collapse their JV team, and move everyone up to Varsity to get their numbers up before the game. This forced Redwood JV to end their season early and robbed those players of their season finale. To read more about this tragic incident, click here.
Shortly after the Cowhide loss, Mt Whitney (obviously) gave back the hide, but it wasn’t in the way that Redwood expected. Many people are talking about the whole thing, but then again, we as a school should not let this get to our heads.
Sure, it was a bummer that Whitney didn’t show up to the rally, but that’s in the past. All we can do at this point in time is accept what happened and when it is our turn to let them borrow The ‘Hide for a year, we need to respect the tradition and do it right.
