Cowhide is one of the biggest events during the school year. Along with the Cowhide game comes a hype rally.
I had the chance to talk to many seniors, underclassmen, and an administrator to see how they felt about seniors saving seats.
Madison Tamayo 20′ said, “I missed all of my classes and missed the rally in order to be first in line.” She does not get excused from her classes, but she was ok with it because “its worth to capture your last memory of the great cowhide, especially in the front row.” She was first in line and got first choice of seating when the gates opened at 5pm.
Tamayo feels seniors should have seniority over underclassmen because seniors have been at the school longer and want to make their last year the best. Tamayo continued to say, “Everyone will have their turn.”
Abby Billingsley, ’20, also agreed with Tamayo that seniors should be treated differently at football games because “people should honor that it is their last year and seniors have the privilege for front row…When I was a freshman I also felt that it was fair for the seniors to have front row because they deserve to spend their last year to the fullest.”
Billingsley had ticket number 6 and joined Tamayo after the Cowhide rally, right before lunch.
Ashley Wainwright’s, ’20, routine for the day (in order to be in the front of the line) was to miss the rally and get a lot of food with her friends for the amount of hours they will have to wait in line.
Many underclassmen such as Alia Backlund, ’22, Madison Andrade, ’22, and Bryann Block, ’23, respected and understood it as fair for seniors to have priority. They went towards the end of the school day to hop in line and still get a good spot for the game.
Mr. Gonzalez, part of Redwood’s administration staff, said on behalf of supervising the gate, “Seniors cannot save seats for their friends, our staff tries to make the process as fair as possible, so we pass out tickets and try to monitor the line as much as possible so all kids have an equal opportunity.”
Gonzales also agrees with most kids on the campus that people should honor seniors being excited for getting front row.
