Just last month, on January 2nd, 2019, a new reality singing competition show premiered titled The Masked Singer. It is an American remake of the original series called King of Mask Singer, which is a very popular survival show in South Korea. There is a variety of remakes made by different countries; America is only one of the many.
America recently garnered interest in the broadcast in South Korea because of a few American celebrities that appeared as contestants. Deadpool star, Ryan Reynolds, sang on the Korean TV show disguised as a unicorn, his appearance was known as the most famous reveal because of his popularity in both America and South Korea. Ken Jeong, a well-known actor and comedian, also performed as a contestant on King of Mask Singer dressed as a golden pig. Jeong is currently a panelist for the The Masked Singer alongside artists Robin Thicke, Nicole Scherzinger, and Jenny Mccarthy.
The program’s concept features celebrity contestants that are masked in a costume from head-to-toe. The guest singers choose a song of their own choice to perform in a face-off competition. With votes from the live audience and panelists, one competitor is put up for elimination and the other is safe for the week. The eliminated contestant is revealed at the end of each episode. The fun aspect of the show is evidently the anticipation and oblivion of who each celebrity singer is, so the show offers hints of their identities. The panelists, then, are given time to give each performer one question to try and determine their identity.
The celebrity contestants for the show have been reported to have 65 Grammy nominations, 16 multi-Platinum albums, 16 Emmy nominations, 9 Broadway Shows, 4 Super Bowl titles, and 4 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame combined. In the latest episodes, the recent reveals that have been made were NFL player Antonio Brown, comedian Tommy Chong, NFL hall of famer Terry Bradshaw, comedian Margaret Cho, actress Tori Spelling, and talk show host Ricki Lake. There are 12 celebrity contestants in total that are appearing, so don’t hesitate to join the audience and panlists in predicting the identity of the masked singers every Wednesday at 9:00 PM ET!
