Tonight, women’s basketball starts off their season against Exeter Union High School at 7:30 pm.
Prior to this game, the team has had only one scrimmage game, which was against Tulare Union. Head Coach Gary Hylton feels that the scrimmage went according to plan.
Hylton says, “Our first scrimmage went as expected. We had the opportunity to see how far we have come since summer and what we need to work on. I would say it was very successful.”
Hylton continues by saying he wants to see good execution and team basketball tonight. Not only is tonight’s game special because it is the first game of the season, but it’s also special because it is the first Redwood basketball game in about two years.
While that’s incredibly exciting for players and fans alike, it does have a little bit of a negative effect on team chemistry.
Power forward Kiersten Moshier ‘22 says that she believes last year’s hiatus leaves the team with a lot of work that has to be done. Moshier says, “We didn’t really have a season at all last year, so this is our first real game as a team. So we obviously still have a lot to learn, and a lot of growth that needs to occur as the season progresses.”
Moshier also goes on to say that in tonight’s game, she wants to work on rebounding, making her shots, and overall just being really aggressive when she’s on the court.
Point guard Serena Webster ‘22 wants to see her team on the same page tonight. “The biggest thing I want to see from our team tonight is communication and everyone coming together as a whole team.”
Shooting guard and team captain Isabella Valero ‘22 feels that this is a group that has a chance to go far this year. Valero says, “I think my team has the potential to go far this year with the talented players we have on the team. I think this season is going to be a great one for our team.”
