The 3 champions from EYL were Audrey Segura ’25, Emily Carvalho, ’27, and Sophia Garcia, ’27. Segura says, “I won two matches at league and was able to achieve 245 high school career wins!”

Segura has been one of Redwood’s best wrestlers in her 4 years on the team. Segura says “I was able to accomplish being a 4x league champ. This being the last league tournament of my high school career, I went into it just going out and doing what I do in a room of people I know love and support me.”

Carvalho competes in the weight class of 170lbs. The sophomore went into EYL with around 31 won matches and gives thanks to God. Carvalho says “Being able to trust God is the reason I have gotten as far as I have. I didn’t have a big target on my back because the year prior I didn’t win, so my only goal for EYL was to win it all with ease.”

Garcia went into EYL with a record of 13-11. Garcia says, “Losing to opponents I’ve won to, and winning to opponents I’ve lost to, as well as God getting me through to win my goals and being in my corner at all times is what pushed me. Winning EYL was a big goal for me and it felt good for my dedication to finally come through.”

As many of the seniors are coming to the end of their high school season, they have a lot to be grateful for. Jazrine Nieto, ’25, says, “I’m grateful for my teammates and coaches for always encouraging [me] and for my dad for pushing me this season. Since it’s coming to a end I’m not too worried about my EYL results, what matters more is what comes after that time to lock in for postseason.”

Nieto isn’t worried about her outcome. Nieto says “One of my challenges at the EYL was definitely getting over the flu the week before. My body was still doing a lot of recovering.”

Jillian Lopez, ’25, says, “Going out of EYL [in] my last year, I’m glad we just had fun as a team and celebrated our wins.”
