This past weekend, Redwood’s Mock Trial team headed down to Sacramento as representatives in this years State competition. They placed 11th out of the 35 participating schools! I talked to Caleb Rodriquez and Kenya Ochoa about their experience and how they did at the competition.

Compared to last year, they did relatively similar says Caleb, “Last year we won county and placed 11th at state” and repeated that ranking this year as well. Even though they placed around the same level “We’re really satisfied with our performance because this year we lost the first round but we went 3-0 after that and beat LA county which is a really big, and competitive school” says Caleb. “We were hoping for top 8, because they get a medal but we didn’t get there. We think we lost the first round by just enough to kind of push us out of the top 8, but we’re still satisfied with how we did.”

Another member of the team, Kenya Ochoa says “We did a little bit better in county, we were more prepared and during our final round it was a lot easier to go against the team that we were up against. This year it was kind of like we were going through the motions one last time and it was really nice to have that little break [before heading off to state].” “When we got to state, competition was roughly the same for us. I think the biggest hurdle we had was our first round. The team was so polished and impressive. It was a lot of fun and the judge was super engaged with us. It was a great learning experience” she says and “a good way to connect with her teammates.
