The winter season is officially back at Redwood High School, which means Basketball, Soccer, and of course, Wrestling! The Rangers have currently gone to the Clovis West Shootout on November 23rd, and the Robert Arobollo Invitiational at Madera on December 6th.
The Rangers had 4 placers in Clovis, with Kobe Negrete, ’27 taking 4th in the 126 weight class. Adrian De Leon, ’25 taking 1st in the 157 weight class, Gunner Benedict, ’25, placing 3rd, and Trent Freeborn, ’25, taking 6th in the 285 weight class.
Ranger Wrestling also took 8th place in Madera with 116 points overall, with Negrete, De Leon, and Benedict, taking 2nd, 5th, and 2nd at the 120 weight class, 150 weight class, and 157 weight class, respectfully.
Assistant Coach Michael Wright had this to say on how his team has been shaping up over the first 2 tournaments of the year: “I think it’s a good start. I think we learned a lot and kind of figuring out what weight class guys are, and getting some match-ups that went our way and some didn’t.”
Wright also commented on how the team has risen to the challenge in D1 and facing some of the best schools in Central Section. “It’s just a matter of putting it together throughout a season and just getting better every week. Our kids are pretty used to doing that, so I feel confident, says Wright.
The Varsity team will next head up to Buchanan High School on Friday, December 20th, and Saturday, December 21st, in the Zinkin Classic. Junior Varsity will make the short trip on that same Saturday to Lemoore.
Wright also added his overall view of the season as it gets going: “I think its a good start. It’s not perfect by any means, but we know that we have room to improve and we’re gonna keep working at it, and I think by end we’ll be where we wanna be.”
