Determining the best Halloween movie is a difficult task. Some suggest the iconic films that defined the horror genre, like ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ and ‘The Exorcist’, while others suggest cozy animated classics; like ‘Casper’ and ‘Coraline’. My personal favorite movies to watch during the Halloween season are ‘Scream’ (1996), and ‘The Thing’ (1982).

I always rewatch ‘Scream’ on or around Halloween day because it is the perfect thriller/slasher with a Halloween spirit. The plot twist never gets old and the movie cleverly challenges classic horror tropes.
‘The Thing’ is one of my favorite movies because it is a ‘Lord of the Flies’-esque sci-fi thriller. It displays how easily a group of civilized, smart people can succumb to their basic instincts. It also uses strictly practical effects, with no CGI, which makes it stand out against many modern horror movies.
Jacob Alvarez, ‘25, says his favorite Halloween movie is ‘Hocus Pocus’, which was released on July 16, in 1993.
“I like the plot and the storyline.”
He says he likes, “dressing up and decorating” for Halloween. Alvarez says his plans are, “…either going out or staying in.” He says he’s dressing up as one of the three blind mice with his friends.
Genesis Chavez, ‘25, says her favorite Halloween movies are, “any of the ‘Scream’ or ‘Halloween’ movies.”
“I like watching them every Halloween with my family because it gives an excuse to spend a night together having snacks and staying inside of home all day.”
She says, “My favorite thing to do during Halloween season is going to fairs and pumpkin patches. My family always starts the month with going to the Fresno Fair. Its been a tradition ever since I can remember. The pumpkin patch is also something fun my family and I enjoy. We take so many pictures and it’s fun to pick a pumpkin from a real patch.”
She says her favorite part is going to her grandmother’s house.
Chavez says, “Since trick-or-treating isn’t what me and my brothers do anymore, we instead help out making snacks and eating them with everyone.”
Carson Byl, ‘28, says his favorite Halloween movie is, “‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ because I grew up watching it and I like the characters. My favorite character is the Mayor.”
He says during the Halloween season he listens to the ‘Coraline’ and ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ soundtracks.
Byl says his favorite things about Halloween are, “dressing up and the weather.”
He ends by saying his plans for Halloween are to go trick-or-treating.
“I am dressing up as Dexter Morgan because he’s my favorite character.”
