However, just a few years ago there wasn't as much variety in the ways people could listen to music. Such as the early 2000’s CDs and vinyls were highly popular forms of listening to music, due it being some of the few ways to listen to your favorite artist.
Both CDs and vinyls are still bought by students today, however, many prefer one over the other. Four Redwood students were asked which type of physical media they preferred.
Jose Morfin-Sanchez, ‘25, is an avid fan of music, listening mainly to the grunge and Nu-Metal genre with artists such as Deftones, Slipknot, System of a Down and Limp Bizkit.
Sanchez says that he has owned CDs before from Mexican artists although he has no idea where they’re at.
Between either having a CD or Vinyl collection Sanchez says he would rather own CDs.
“CDs because they’re more portable and you could put them in cars mostly. So they’re still accessible and they look nicer than a vinyl and you can actually carry them places. So they’re more useful and serve more purpose than vinyls.”
Sanchez says if he could own any album on CD the album he would choose would be ‘Golden Best’ by Omega Tribe.
Cadence McGee, ‘25, is consumed by music, listening to many types of genres like shoe-gaze, oldies, alternative, and rap, along with her favorite artists being Kali Uchis, King Krule, Eminem, Faye Webster, Fleshwater and Deftones.
McGee does own a vinyl collection having albums by King Krule, Eminem, Melanie Martinez, and Tyler, the Creator.
The form of physical media she said that she preferred from the two would be vinyls.
“I like the sound of music on the record player, it makes it feel more authentic. I feel like vinyl covers also have more space for the artwork and I like that about them. Plus I also really like putting the needle on the record.”
She said that if she could have any album on vinyl it would be ‘Heaven or Las Vegas’ by Cocteau Twins.
Lastly, Jayro Vargas, ‘24, music taste consists of genres such as rap, hip-hop, RnB, rock and artists such as Tyler, the Creator, Deftones, and Nirvana.
Vargas has a small collection of CDs, only having two with both albums being made by the same artist. He owns ‘Wolf’ and ‘Cherry Bomb’ by Tyler, the Creator.
When siding with CDs he says, “I feel like CDs are cheaper and more accessible than vinyls.”
However, he says that he would love to own the album ‘Wolf’ by Tyler, the Creator on vinyl.
