Derrick Chau, ’19

Although the True Ranger assembly took place last month on Monday, October 15th, the winners will always remain as TRUE. Among the number of students that won the award, Derrick Chau, ‘19, was a winner that perfectly exemplifies what a True Ranger and amazing student is.

When Chau was notified that he was winning the award, he was delightfully surprised because he was completely unaware of which teacher nominated him. Not every student has the privilege of winning this award, so Chau has made some contemplation on why he was worthy of being a True Ranger. He said, “I believe I’m a True Ranger because I always try to give my full effort in everything that I do, and because I try my utmost to have every quality a ranger should have.” He also described himself as collaborative, diligent, and cheerful.

Chau mentioned a few aspects about himself and what he does in his classes. He volunteers in class, asks questions, is timely and organized with his assignments. Those are only a few of the many skills he has and practices in class. This shows how Chau is an exemplary student at Redwood.

Other than giving his best efforts in all his classes, which also include many AP courses, Chau is also involved in many extra curricular activities that he has put a great amount of his energy towards. His extracurriculars include FBLA, in which he is the vice president of activities and section vice president, and CSF, which he is the president of. Chau likes to associate himself with these groups because he has a lot of pride in them. He said, “(FBLA) has really defined my high school experience because i’ve been able to get out of my comfort zone and make a lot of incredible connections and (CSF) has taught me many valuable qualities such as responsibility and organization.”

Overall, Chau is evidently a ranger that deserves to be labeled as TRUE. He is a prime example of a role model student who tries his best inside and outside of class. He expressed many thoughts of honor in winning the award by saying, “I think it’s really cool to be recognized for my dedication and hard work to my studies and activities on campus.” He feels that being acknowledged as a True Ranger is very significant to him. He plans on taking these qualities he’s made as a ranger to his future college after high school. Even while attending a different school, Chau will forever be known as a TRUE ranger.
