This week, Owen Koford, ’23 will presume the role of Albert Peterson in the Redwood Theatre musical production of Bye Bye Birdie.
When Koford was notified about his role, he says, “I was ecstatic when I got the role because I haven’t done a musical for years and I was able to get such an active part.”
Koford says he associates the word “humbling” with receiving the cast list because “[Albert] is a very flawed character who many people can learn from”.
Given the rehearsals are busy, he says that he “…get[s] little to no down-time because I am almost always either in the scene, doing costumes, or practicing other scenes”.
Despite the rehearsal schedule, Koford says that “…anyone can do the musical”. He compares his schedule and workload in comparison to this. His typical schedule consists of two choir classes, band, three AP courses, and a variety of extracurricular activities.
In preparation for his performance, he says, “I’ve done a lot of studying and memorizing with inspiration from the movie and soundtrack, and also other musical productions.”
Considering he has not performed in a musical production for approximately six years, Koford says he is “looking forward to being on stage again”.
In addition to his cast-mates and their support, he says that “…the musical crew should definitely get some props for helping me out and being there for everyone on the show.”
Tickets are available to purchase online here or in-person at the LJ Williams Theater on February 2, 3, and 4. The musical will debut February 2 and 3 at 7:00pm, and the 4 at 2:00pm and 7:00pm.
