Multiple WYL championships, multiple Valley championships, and one great team. This coming season will be different, they will now face the challenge of Division One girls.

For the third year in a row, Coach Lonnie de Asis, will be leading his girls through the season. Coach de Asis has been playing golf himself since he was five years old, and has been coaching the Redwood team for three years. Since this team got moved up from division 2, the coach doesn’t know how the season will go.

He wants his team to just go out and play one league game at a time. The team has lost lots of upperclassmen but has gained multiple freshmen. This will all be good for the program since there will be a large amount of girls for years to come.

Coach de Asis thinks that hard work, practice, and dedication, the team can achieve anything that they want.  Coach de Asis says, “ My main goal for this year will be to go out and get the WYL win.”

With the set five girls being, Sara Salisbury, ’21, Rylee Santiago, ‘22,  Lily Stetson, ’21, Ashley Wainwright, ’20, and Sophie Wasem, ‘23, these five girls have high hopes as they go along in the season.

The leader of the team is Rylee Santiago who was, and is one of the best golf players in the state. Placing in the top ten in her 2018 golf tournament. She has her hopes and goals for this year as well. Santiago thinks that the team as a whole will win WYL.

Santiago told us, “For me, a challenge will be mental. Sometimes I doubt myself so much that I start to screw up.” With her being one of the best golf players, she always wants to find a challenge and along with some more of her goals, she wants to advance to a higher level of golf to get some more competition.

Sophie Wasem has her goals and perspective on her last years of playing Ranger Golf. She believes that the season will go pretty well. They have lots of new girls and lots of potential, due to this they have a good chance of winning WYL.

The girls all know that the move from D2 to D1 will be a very challenging thing. There will be lots more competition for everyone there. The girls all agree that, “our biggest challenge will probably be staying consistent with low scores.”

Lillie Wasem is one of the new players this year and she is one of the subs for games. Although she is a freshman, she still has lots of things that she will hope to achieve this year. Wasem thinks that being on this team is super fun. She wants to cut down her score by five strokes. Wasem added, “We all encourage each other and build each other up!”

Girls golf is off to a great start. They have won some tournaments and hope to continue to do well throughout the season
