On Sunday, December 21st, Eduardo Rodriguez Cazares ’26, competed an event held by social media influencers Adin Ross, Neon, and renowned boxer Ryan Garcia. It took place in the Visalia Convention Center, in which he won. Though he declined the contract, he received seven thousand dollars.

Eduardo first heard about this opportunity when he was running with his teammates on a run that his coach takes them on every Sunday.
After they finished running, since they were already close to the convention center, they took the chance, and they waited in line.
In order to compete in the competition, Eduardo had to be eighteen.
That was a problem as he was seventeen at the time, but a little white lie never hurt anybody.
“I lied, and I signed up. They weighed me in, and then they took us all to gather around, and once Adin Ross came out, they sent us to the center. Honestly I just got lucky,” said Cazares.
Cazares was selected by Neon, as Neon and Adin were both picking and betting on the fighters they picked, and whoever won, received the most money.
Cazares does not feel he performed even close to his best, “I was really tired from running and standing there, but overall, it was a really fun experience.”
After Cazares won, he received a prize of seven thousand dollars and a contract, the details of which were, five fights for a lot of money, but those fights were not sanctioned professionally.
Eduardo’s goal moving forward is to keep racking up wins and amateurs, and wait until his coach sees the right time for Cazares to debut professionally, and catch a world title.
Cazares’ coach, Mr. Leon, had heard about the event all week.
When the day of the event came after their usual conditioning, Cazares took his chance.
“We left the sports park, and he’s like, ‘Oh, I want to go stand in line, because it’s about 11 o’clock, and there was a big line already.’ He said, ‘I’m gonna go stand over there,'” said Coach Leon.
The idea of Cazares boxing just to box made Coach Leon upset at first, as he did not like the idea of Eduardo putting on the gloves just to go against someone random.
Cazares, on the other hand, was very ecstatic.
“When he first called me, he’s like, ‘Coach, I won. I won’ and he was all ecstatic. I didn’t know how big this thing was; it’s not my thing, streamers and stuff like that.”
Coach Leon
Though Coach Leon was upset, he later understood the traction, “I understood the magnitude of it, you know, he got a bunch of exposure and a lot of views off of it. So I was okay, something positive came out of it.”
After the hype calmed down over the next few days, Coach Leon and Eduardo looked over the contract with PR, and in the end, Eduardo ended up denying the contract.
The reason being that, “It’s more of a streamers, YouTube people, and stuff like that. It’s not the route that I want him to go; I think he’s a lot better than that,” said Coach Leon.
Going forward, Coach Leon wants Eduardo to put education first, wanting him to go to college, and then in the future, he would want Eduardo to go pro.
Eduardo’s mother, Monica Cazares shares her thoughts on this big achievement for her son.
Her comments below are translated from Spanish.
Mrs. Cazares’s reaction to Eduardo fighting in the competition was something she couldn’t believe, “I told him, ‘Oh, come on, stop playing around.’, then he came over and told me everything, and I was like, ‘That’s not true!'”
Mrs. Cazares found out this was true after all through the internet, “So I started searching online, and then I saw him in the videos and I was like, ‘Where is this kid? What’s he up to?’ That’s when I believed him, when I saw the platforms they used.”
Mrs. Cazares couldn’t believe that her son had won, and the others around her couldn’t either.
“On Tuesday everyone was asking me if it was true. I kept saying, ‘I don’t believe it.’ A friend asked me, ‘How do you feel?’ I told her, ‘I still can’t believe this is happening.’ It’s something I didn’t believe at the time, and now I see his potential and how far he can go.”
Mrs. Cazares, Eduardo’s Mother
Her thoughts on the details of the contract Eduardo received were unsteady.
“The contract was frozen when Eduardo won with those people, because those aren’t professional fights. It’s more about getting ratings, not more viewers, more audience,” said Mrs. Cazares. “It’s not something that will help him achieve his goal, and we’ve already talked about it.”
Eduardo is waiting for the right time, “He’s going to wait for a professional to sign him, someone who really dedicates himself to boxing, not to fights like that, just for show or momentary fights or YouTube fights.”
Eduardo wants to get to the caliber of Canelo Álvarez, or possibly even bigger.
