New year, new season, new members. Cross country’s newest members Scarlett Boyle, ‘27, and Andres Nino, ‘27, kick off their first season at Redwood high school as varsity players.

By: July Range

Nino has been doing cross country since he was in 7th grade, while Boyle is in her first year of running.

This being Boyle’s first year doing the sport she says, ”I enjoy running after school with all my friends in the neighborhood. It’s really fun running by all of the communities.”

While running can be fun, it takes a lot of motivation. Nino says, “The running itself is hard, but what motivates me is to keep going and you’ll eventually reach the end.”

Boyle says, “When I go to a meet I just hope I don’t get last and thats my motivation. As well as getting Starbucks afterwards.”

One of the cross country coaches, Tony Ramirez, speaks on how these two freshmen have impressed him so far.

Ramirez says, “Their work ethic is impressive. They are disciplined and very coachable. They get the job done everyday and have really bought into the program.”

Ramirez also talks about how surprised he was with Boyle’s progress this season. He says, “Scarlett kind of snuck in under the radar. She showed up in July and would run 2 miles or so. She’s made huge improvements in a short amount of time.”

He says, “I already knew Andres would make an impact as a freshman because of his middle school accomplishments.”

Ramirez finishes by saying, “I look forward to seeing them continue to enjoy their freshman season with us. They are already off to a good start and I just want to be here for them to provide good guidance and support.”

With the season already beginning, Nino says, “ I’m most excited for the varsity races and getting to know my team.”

Boyle finishes by saying, “I’m most excited to get stronger and make memories!”
