“Dear John” is a romantic drama directed by Lasse Hallström a swedish film director. The movie starts off with a solider named John Tyree who meets a college student named Savannah Curtis and instantly a strong romance sparks between them. Once they build their relationship, John feels like he needs to help his “brothers” in the army mainly because he feels loyal to do so. John and Savannah are separated for several of months and Savannah and John write love letters back and forth to stay connected.
Sooner or later Savannah doesn’t write a love letter to John for two months and he starts to get worried and confused. Savannah soon sends him a letter explaining why it took her so long to send him one mainly because she got engaged to someone else. It was very hard for her to do and she said life was nothing without John, and couldn’t handle being lonely with no one to share life with.
John gets very upset but returns home because his father got very sick and was in the hospital. John soon finds Savannah at the hospital because her husband, Tim, has cancer.
Tim and John have a serious conversation about Tim telling John that Savannah is deeply in love with John still. Tim gave permission to John for them to be happy together if he dies because he wants Savannah to have a happy life.
Savannah and John soon have a deep conversation of why she engaged to someone else, and how she thought about him every second of the day and spent every second to try to bring herself to the phone to tell him. John understands and forgives Savannah but he says “goodbye” while Savannah seeks another time to see him again.
Savannah is devastated and John goes off to the army. It’s been 5 five years and Savannah writes John one last letter explaining how her husband died, and how her and John are still connected through the moon and it always gives her comfort at night.
John came home again, with Savannah ‘s letter as his motivation, runs into her, and they hug emotionally and happily.
This movie brings about many sweet themes of love, betrayal, and forgiveness. Themes of love are shown when John and Savannah fall in love with each other spontaneously and it was sort of like love at first sight. Themes of love also appears in the novel when Savannah helps John realize the good in his father that he was blind to for his whole life.
Themes of betrayal are shown when Savannah betrays John by marrying to another guy when John is stationed away with the army for a very long time.
Themes of forgiveness are shown when Savannah and John meet up again after years and understand the actions each person took and why they did so.
Highly recommend to watch this romance, heart felt movie!!!
