The Athletics Director of Redwood, Mr. Michael Wright, asked Studio Art teacher, Mr. Steven Harris, for student volunteers to paint a few murals in the Redwood gym.
Mr. Harris then chose three seniors and one sophomore, Joseline Lara, ‘25, Laysha Vargas, ‘25, Valeria Gonzalez, ‘25, and Annika Crenshaw, ‘27.
Vargas says, “It’s basically a project where we were assigned to paint in the gym, specifically Mr. Ranger, some letters spelling out Redwood Rangers, a Redwood athletics logo, and some trees by the bleachers.”
All four sections were painted by all four students to help it all be more at home by students than by professionals.
Gonzalez says, “Although it’s all volunteer work, I do enjoy spending time with such creative and artistic people.”

These students spend their free time on weekends to go in and help out when they can, but the hardest part for most of them is trying to find a time they can all go in and help out. Especially with the gym being used for other activities such as practices for sports.
Although Vargas and Gonzalez haven’t painted on such a big surface before, Lara and Crenshaw do have prior experience with a hair salon down Main Street. This gives them an advantage to understand a little more about how to get things going.
In the end, Lara says, “The whole mural is supposed to represent students putting their part into the mural design and just having the student body represented.”
Having students be involved what Redwood wants, so having these students paint on our own gym walls will leave a mark, just like the mural on the music building has for these past few years.
Crenshaw says, “It’s truly an honor to contribute to my school in such a way, and having that up for the rest of my high school years will be fun and overall just an accomplishing experience.”
*** Editor’s Note*** This mural replaces the original Mr Ranger mural that was painted over during the gym’s remodel. You can read about the original gym Ranger and the artist who painted him here.
