On December 19, 2023, the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians show adaptation was released. The show’s debut on Disney Plus has sparked interest in people all around for its familiar name in pop culture, but is it really worth the watch?
The first Percy Jackson movie on the big screen was “The Lightning Thief” in 2010, but fans were a bit underwhelmed and upset by the movie’s departure and the entire difference from the sourcebook.
People found it hard to watch the movie, including the fact that the actors were beyond their teen years and the writing was criticized for the bad dialogue.
The sequel, “Sea of Monsters,” continued the cinematic movie line in 2013, but its die-heart fans were left unamused. This movie was still a bit better than the first one, as it learned from its first mistakes but people still wanted a more accurate adaptation of Rick Riordan’s novels.
With the TV series making its first airings, we are noticing the differences right away. The characters seem more in line with the descriptions from the books, and the plot seems to be taking a course that’s closer to the original storyline.
The characters act like how they are portrayed in the books, and the storyline is more coordinated with the written series.
Some praise the show for embracing the essence of the books, including the characters’ quirks and the personality elements that made the novels so likable and gave it its spark.
Now, onto the TV show cast. It includes a variety of child actors, including Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Leah Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood. Those are the main 3 characters in the show.
Personally, the change in the written characters looks was a good decision. It includes a more diverse look that still matches the personality and likableness of each character in the series.
The actors play their parts perfectly, it’s the most similar adaptation you can get as well as changing some of the elements to make the TV version unique.
The show is releasing an episode one at a time and not all at once so their anticipation for the next new episode.
There are 8 episodes released on the Disney Plus streaming platform, which is the end of the first season. To the fans who wish to watch the show and wonder if it’s just as good as the books, or even just someone who wants to know the lore of Percy Jackson without being a fan of books, the show is a great match for everyone alike!
