The holidays are a joyous and festive time for everybody; young, old, male and female, gay, straight, black and white, everyone loves the holidays! Fall and Winter can be so delightful and fun! But wait a minute…it’s only November. So why do I see Christmas stuff already? Where’s the causal Fall foliage and cozy vibes? Christmas music is already playing all-day? We, as humans and Americans, have fallen prey to the untimely arrival of big-business-advertised Christmas once again.

Is it too early for Christmas? A seemingly polarizing question, but most can answer similarly. The answer is obviously yes! Many people would agree with the fact that, nowadays, businesses and advertisements have promoted Christmas too early.  Recently, after Halloween, the Visalia Mall has already put up the Santa photo booth. Save-Mart and Target are already selling holiday items with Christmas decorations up.

Arianna Vargas, ‘19, said “I think it’s the right amount of early to be setting up for Christmas; Thanksgiving is only one day and it ends so quickly. Although Christmas feels like it’s the entire month. Honestly, it all depends on the person and how they choose to celebrate these festive holidays.”

Savanna Franks, ‘20, also said, “Christmas has came way too early this year! It feels like New Years was like a couple days ago but now we’re already heading into another year.”

The massive commercial success of Christmas has fattened the wallets of businessmen in advertisements, movies, songs and merchandise. Businesses, in prepared response of previous successful years, set up holiday decorations and new products to lure in new and old customers. The purchase and sale of holiday-related commodities gets people talking and that’s when the masses start celebrating and decorating earlier than usual.  

Some people have essentially forgotten the true meaning of Christmas and fall prey to this occurrence. Corporate greed has overwhelmed the holiday season and customers, like unsuspecting boiler men, feed the growing fire. But it’s also a time for students to spend time with their families and enjoy everyone’s presence as well as some who celebrate religious
