The 2020 VUSD school board elections are coming up on November 3, and Dr. Lucia Vázquez is hoping to be re-elected for the District 6 position.

She has held her District 6 position for a few years and still has changes in mind that she wants to bring up to other board members in order to help VUSD be the best school district it can be.

Dr. Lucia Vázquez grew up in Goshen, CA, and currently resides in Visalia, CA. “My family has been going to Visalia schools for many generations,” said Vázquez.

Vázquez explains how she “has a world of experience. I have been involved with the schools as a parent, as a part of PTA, as school site council, and I was on district committees.” She has been a part of various programs throughout VUSD. “For a couple of years, I even worked [within] the classroom”; she has been both “a long term sub and short term sub”, so she has experienced the school district through many different aspects.

All these different perspectives, add experience to her background and make her a unique candidate. “I have the skills, commitment, passion, and knowledge to do the job. I bring a different perspective.”

She uses her personal background as inspiration for her goal to advocate for all students, teachers, and parents throughout VUSD. “I represent a faction of the population that’s not always represented…The fact that I am a female, I am a Latina, and I live on the poor side of town is important.”

She hopes to give all students and parents a voice in the decisions made by the school board. She likes to see active, voting parents, who care about the well being of their children. “I am not afraid to speak up. If I am [re-elected], I will remain standing strong because there is work to be done. I need to be here, focusing on the kids. Kids and parents need people who are going to [advocate] for them.”

Dr. Lucia Vázquez is running for the District 6 seat. Elections are on November 3rd.
