On May 6, Savannah Torres, class of 2023, was elected ASB [Associated Student Body] President.
Torres will serve for the duration of the 2022-2023 school year. She will be in her senior year.
“My family looked forward to me [running] when I was younger, but I didn’t have the confidence to actually run,” Torres says. “I felt really confident about running for ASB President [this year], and I’m super excited for next year.”
Torres has a long-lasting relationship with ASB. She started her leadership journey in fourth grade, taking part in student government. Eight years later, she was elected ASB President.
“I want people to know that Redwood is a Big Blue school, where every single student on campus represents Redwood,” Torres says. “Whether it’s [during] events and [similar things] we [put on], dress-up weeks or, just big events. I want people to be like, ‘Dang, that’s Redwood!’”
Torres had her freshman year cut short by COVID-19. She got to experience what Redwood was pre-COVID, but only in the fall.
She missed events such as Spring Fling, Battle of the Classes, Mr. Ranger Week [now known as Mr. and Mrs. Ranger Week], and much more.
However, Torres was very attentive to the events and traditions she was able to experience.
She says, “I feel like [during] my freshman year I was pretty observant [at school events] just because I had such a big passion for ASB.”
To get a sense of Redwood traditions that COVID-19 took from her, Torres has been looking through old yearbooks in the library. She watched videos online as well but would like to focus on the books.
When recalling her experience looking at the books, Torres said, “[In the yearbooks], it just looks like Redwood was the Big Blue school. Like everyone knew right away. I was like, ‘I want to go there’. And that’s what I want to bring back.”
