On Wednesday, November 2, 2022, Giddings Street and the bridge connecting Redwood High School’s two campuses were temporarily shut down for maintenance.

The street will be closed for three weeks, one of which is fall break, to minimize the impact on passing periods.

Students will walk between the two campuses by crossing Giddings Street under the bridge.

Principal Dr. Amanda Richard says, “We’re shutting down Giddings [Street] so students can have a safe passageway when they go to [and from] Sierra Vista for classes”

According to Dr. Richard, the treads on the bridge are worn out and need to be replaced. “We had requested that the treads get redone for safety reasons,” she says.

Dr. Richard says that the plan was done in collaboration with the City of Visalia and Visalia Unified School District.

“The safest way to get kids across the street is just to shut it down so we don’t have to worry about cars,” she says. “We don’t want to block traffic because it takes 10 minutes every period to get kids across the bridge.”

Dr. Richard adds, “it’s easier just to shut down the road.”
