Metal shop, one of the three class named shops at Redwood Highschool. Metal Shop is Metal fabrication, welding, and building. It’s a place where students can learn how to weld and fix things related to metal and do more. You can learn how to do more in Metal shop, and these activities can help you later in life.
Alize Morga ‘22 is one of the Students that chose to do Metal Shop in their Freshman year, when they first saw it when they came for their 8th grade visit. In her words, she “chose Metal Shop because Metal Shop, Wood Shop, Auto Shop was pretty interesting when I came for the Eighth grade visit, and learning how to weld can make you a lot of money if you know how to weld properly.”
Morga says, “What you do in Metal shop is fabrication, welding, building. Fixing pipes, metal chairs, tables, anything metal really … In Metal Shop you can practice welding, learn how to use the machines, and learn about welding.”
“I made a water tank, and I didn’t need any help really, I also helped make the big machine with other people, we just finished it this year,” Says Morga.
Morga added “I use a miller welder, there’s also a torch, a Band saw, Abrasive Saw, a Pedalstool, and a plasma cutter. A plasma cutter is just a torch that doesn’t need to wait to heat up or use oxygen to cut the metal.”
“We do safety tests for machines and wear the safety precautions, know what to do and what not to do … Always wear goggles, some machines need gloves and for other machines it’s hazardous to wear gloves, you can’t wear hanging jewelry, or have the strings of sweaters hanging out since it might get stuck on some machines” Morga stated.
