Friday, April 1st, was a very special spirit day. Principal Shin challenged Redwood students and staff to wear their Redwood attire or colors to earn an extended lunch the following Friday.
Luckily, both students and teachers rose to the challenge and exceeded the 65% participation criteria.
“I don’t have the exact percentage but I know it was nearly 70%,” says assistant principal Mr. Orosco, in regards to the participation rate. He also says “there were some teachers that had very few students not wearing navy.”
Mr. Cain, an English and AVID teacher, is excited about it and says Friday is a great day to have an extended lunch.
He says that “the lunch period’s going to be a great time for friendship and fellowship and just to get out and enjoy the weather and be humans and have a good time together.”
“It was really neat on Friday to see the school washed in Redwood blue. It felt like the culture and spirit of Redwood is getting back to where we want it,” says Cain.
He is looking forward to “having a normal adult…lunch period where [they’ll] get to digest [their] food and have a conversation instead of just quickly running somewhere to grab food and shoveling it in [their] mouths as quickly as possible.”
Students have varying levels of excitement. “I won’t be here because of ditch day for seniors but yeah I think it’s good” says Aishdeep Ghotra, 22′.
Reuben Contreras, 25′, is very happy to have the extra time. He says “I don’t have to see my teachers for ten more minutes. I won’t have a mental breakdown.”
