An update on the Redwood High School musical for 2024-2025, The Little Mermaid.
By: Milo Rachal
The Redwood musical, The Little Mermaid, will be performed to the public in February from the 15th to the 17th. But before that, the cast has to practice and rehearse. How about we check in on how they’re preparing for the show!
First, the cast. Mrs. Stacy Galvan, the Drama teacher and musical director, comments on how well the cast is doing. The cast is composed of 87 students, most of them play multiple parts. They rehearse three days a week for 2 and a half hours right now, and as they get closer to the show that time only increases.
Mrs. Galvan says, “They’re really doing great, everyone’s prepared for rehearsal and getting their parts down.”
Second, the sets and props. Sets and props are important to any musical. It gives context and provides the audience with an easier way to suspend their disbelief. This requires the help of another class Mrs. Galvan teaches; Stagecraft.
Mrs. Galvan says, “Stagecraft everyday has a new DIY craft project to do. I don’t think anything is 100% done, but it’s close.”
The main things they’re building currently are the columns for the castle, a beach, and lots of coral. A large part of decorating for the show can’t be done until they are inside the theater, because they’re just too big to hold inside anywhere.
The cast will not be in the theater for a while.
Mrs. Galvan states, “We won’t be in the theater until right after winter break. January 14th is when we load into the theater. We have to be done with everything before winter break.”
