Coach Curtis Allen, once a Redwood student in 1979, led the Rangers to an 8-2 season, an EYL title, and a second straight Cowhide win, all done in his first year.

Winning Cowhide as a coach now felt the same way as it did when he was a player, Allen said, “When I was here, when I played back and graduated in ’80, man it was exciting.”

Allen competed around some elite company, he says “I got a chance to play against Michael Young who ended up playing in UCLA, and played with the rams. I got the chance to compete with those guys, played with some of my buddies Kenny Fitzgerald, all the guys, and it was great. We won, it was unbelievable, electrifying.”

The excitement Cowhide brings never changes, “coming back you never think you can get that same type of feeling, but being a coach and being back at it again and seeing all of the rallies and seeing all that went on today and through the week, same feeling man,” said Allen.

On how his past coaching experience has shaped him into the coach he is today, Allen says, “I just think you learn from all your coaches, it’s helped me be a more patient coach. We do a lot of stuff that colleges do, I think that helps our players, our players bought into the system, and we’re 8-2 and we won the Cowhide.”

When Allen became head coach, his goal was more than just football, it was to “build better men, to teach them how to be a man in life.”

As a coach, what Allen expects out of his players is “to be the best versions of themselves, give a hundred and ten percent every play, play snap to whistle, and be a better person than they are a player.”
