Varsity boys soccer started off their season with a win against Roosevelt High. Coach Chica is new to the varsity soccer program this year. Chica has high expectations for the boys’ this upcoming season. Chica says, “The focus has been meshing as a team and working hard for one another and becoming a family.” Due to weather conditions on Wednesday evening, the varsity boys game suddenly got moved from 6 pm to 4 pm.

The 2021 season was very unexpected for the soccer program due to COVID-19 restrictions, but luckily the boys got to have their season. Chica says, “Obviously, seeing the boys get a win after not playing for a whole year is a real special moment.”

The boy’s swept Roosevelt with the final score being 4-1. Will Kennedy, ‘23 scored two goals for Redwood. The other two goals were scored by Ernesto Pacheco, ‘22 and Gavin House, ‘22. Chica says some stars of the boys program to look out for are, “Gavin House, Cole Pritchett, Ernesto Pacheco, Josh Saesee, and Jose Rosales.”

In the first 10 minutes of the game, Pacheco, ‘22 scored the first goal of the season. Chica says, “ It was a sigh of relief and seemed to get the butterflies out of the boys’ system.” After the boys scored their first goal, everything clicked. The boy’s began to easily connect with each other, which eventually led to the win.

Cole Pritchett, ‘22, says, “It feels awesome to be back on the field and playing again. I missed playing with the boys and for Redwood.” The boys soccer program is extremely eager to be back on the field.  During the 2021 season the boys have been training extremely hard for their upcoming games. Pritchett says, “Everyone on the team is committed and working hard every practice.”

Senior player Reid Terry, ‘21, knows that the boys are going to have a very successful year due to their hard work and dedication. He says, “I have high expectations for this..season. It’ll be what we make it.”

The boys’ next home game is on March 30th Vs. Mission Oak. JV starts at 4:30 pm and Varsity starts at 6 pm.
