We asked chess club members about the club and why more people should join.

There are many clubs here on campus, but some need some more spotlight! The Chess Club, run by Mr. Rojas, a Biology teacher in room 89, is all about the fun of chess!
Mr. Rojas says, “This is the first year for the chess club and right now, I’m just trying to build a community of people who are into chess.”
Mr. Rojas’ goal is to “create a space for them” to be able to play chess in real life with friends and family instead of just playing chess “on a phone or a computer screen.”
After hearing from Mr. Rojas, we asked some members what they thought about the club.
To others, it may seem that chess is a boring and time consuming game but avid chess players find it interesting and a fun game.
Maximilian Barycki ‘26 says, “It’s a very relaxing and a chill game and you get to meet new people.” Chess club is a chance to go make new friendships and even better, you enjoy the same game as them! Battling with friends can make you feel like a mastermind and give you an ecstatic feeling which chess club brings.
Ricardo Castro ‘25 says, “The fact I can play chess and get to learn some stuff from other people” makes an exciting environment for the players.
Chess club is somewhere that’s enjoyable for everyone that goes. Evan Silva says “If you like chess and a calm environment just go to a chess club.”
Isabella Chan ‘25 says, “Not only do you get to play with other people that enjoy it, but you’re also able to play against Mr. Rojas who’s a cool teacher.”
Mr. Rojas’ reasoning as to creating the club was “I want to allow students the opportunity to go to chess tournaments.”
Chess club needs more members, so join in on the fun and go to room 89 after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays!
