The ASB stickers are often used to show school pride, display a sense of community, and are more than just a decorative item that offers several benefits to the school and Rangers.

Hailey Aston, the ASB director for Redwood High school gives her thoughts on ASB stickers and all the great things they provide for students. She says, “The benefits are that you get into any home sporting event for free unless it is playoffs. You also get discounts on dances, such as harvest, formal, spring fling, and prom. While for prom you get the biggest discount which is nice. Students also get discounts in the finance center on merchandise, that’s 10 percent off. And something new that we are doing this year, which I’ve got to credit Mr. Orosco for, who is the one who kind of took the lead on it. There are now local businesses that are giving discounts to students who have their ASB stickers.”

It is not just places you go to for lunch, but for letterman jackets as well. Different businesses will offer varying amounts of discounts to those who have the sticker.

When asked if it’s worth buying for students, she says “I believe so, but it depends on what you’re interested in. If you know you’re going to multiple events, you’re going to pay off your card. If you are going to go get lunch once a week and use that discount then it immediately pays off. So I think it’s worth it.”

The money that you spend on ASB stickers goes directly back to you in the form of school events such as Cowhide, homecoming, etc.

Aston adds more to the idea on some things that students do not necessarily know about ASB stickers, and says, “I think sometimes kids get confused on how they purchase their ASB stickers online. You can get the physical sticker that goes on your ID from Mrs. Melendez in the finance center. But also it’s going to be uploaded on to your Minga so it’ll be on your ID on Minga. So check both of those, have both so that if you lose your physical ID, your Minga is still working. So make sure that you have both of them, so that you’re getting all the benefits from it.”

Lastly, she says, “The stickers are hugely important to us, it is essentially our biggest fundraiser so without the ASB sticker’s money it is really hard to hold different events. Redwood does really big and fun events, and those cost a lot of money. So it is a huge fundraiser for us and a huge way that we supplement the different activities throughout the year, even if they are small things. Such as if we do good luck little gift baskets to the sports team or we do good luck gifts for dance, all of that costs money, and the funds that we earn from ASB stickers goes directly to that.”

Taylor Langford, ’25, a 4-year ASB student says the sticker “is definitely worth buying because it gets you into all athletic events for free and is a great way to support your school. It is nice to have a lot of kids at sporting events or any event in general because we get to show our spirit and our love for Redwood.”

Michael Wright, the athletic director for Redwood High School says a benefit when it comes to the Athletic program is “I think it is a great benefit to our student body if they use it because if you don’t use it, it doesn’t do anything for you. So it does give them into all athletic events free, which I think is the major upside to buying the ASB sticker. So if you use it, and you attend five events, it pays off itself. So that’s the main thing, it helps athletics in a sense. They are more likely to go to more events. So then we will get a bigger crowd and at some point, it becomes free to the students so the chances of them coming to the games are higher. And that helps us so that we can get bigger crowds or more people period.”

How does it affect the athletes and the school culture?

Wright says, “We are trying to grow the whole student atmosphere and all the kids coming together and the students just having fun together. You know a safe and fun environment. And then of course all sports in general, they like to have their friends here to watch them play. And they feed off the crowd’s energy and that excitement can score [the players] into a tough victory sometimes whether it’s having those students in that corner of the gym, in that section of that football stadium, right there in front. To have them cheering, it does motivate them, and help them to succeed.”

Mayra Melendez, who works in the finance office, says, “ASB stickers are not worth the $35 if you are not someone who doesn’t go to football games or someone that doesn’t go to a school dance, then it won’t be beneficial to you, unless you do go off campus to use the discount. I think for the most part for the students here at Redwood a lot of them are involved with sports or the events that go on.”
