For many students at Redwood High School, they have one sport and hobby they have focused on throughout their entire high school career.

For Emily Inhphom, ’26, this is not the case.

Inhphom is a well-rounded student with a variety of activities to her name.

At the beginning of Inhphom’s freshman year, she participated in a range of different sports, including cross-country, wrestling, and track. And has continued doing so throughout her high school years.

While most of her classmates concentrated on perfecting one skill, Inhphom couldn’t choose just one; she wanted to challenge herself in every area she could.

Inhphom said her decision to take on multiple sports wasn’t about competition, it was about curiosity.

With all the different paths offered, it was clear that Inhphom was dedicated to testing her strength towards them all.

With a lot of sports on her plate, it takes years of dedication to continue pursuing these sports activities.

It requires a substantial amount of training, a complex scheduling process, and a significant time commitment.

For Inhphom, that balance doesn’t come easily. Her days often begin before sunrise with cross-country practice and end with late-night homework sessions, between school, training, and competitions.

She’s had to develop strong time management skills and learn to prioritize rest.

But even with her impressive self-discipline, Inhphom admits that balancing all these activities doesn’t always go smoothly.

As her schedule intensified, so did the pressure on herself to rethink how she approached her time, energy, and mental health.

Juggling three different schedules can be difficult to adjust to. Along with schoolwork, it leaves little time for rest, social activities, and other responsibilities.

This can cause a massive amount of stress to school athletes, such as Inhphom.

At school, where students often focus on one passion, Inhphom stands out for successfully juggling multiple commitments.

At times when the weight of expectation has felt overwhelming for Inhphom, she recalls moments when she questioned whether the long nights and rushing were worth it.

“There were days I felt like I was running without energy. But every time I thought about quitting I remembered why I started.”

Her ability to balance rigorous sports schedules with artistic dedication in band has made her a standout example of perseverance and balance.

Beyond the physical effort, Inhphom journey has also been one for personal growth.

Each sport has taught her something different: endurance from cross country, discipline from wrestling, and focus from track.

Inhphom shares what hardships she experienced along the way, “They all challenge me in their own way.” She says, “Running is about pacing myself and staying consistent, while wrestling pushes me mentally to keep fighting even when I’m tired. All of these sports teach me that small improvements matter.”

Despite the long hours and demanding routines, Inhphom views each sport as more than just a competition. Every challenge has taught her something valuable that extends far beyond the field.

When asked who played a role in Inhphom life in entering a sport, she says, “My parents actually influenced me to be active in high school, and I’m happy they encouraged me to.”

Inhphom recalls how her parents never miss a game or concert, even if it means sitting through back-to-back events on the same day, “They’ve always been there for me”, she says, “Seeing them in the stands gives me an extra push to keep going.”

Inhphom’s parent’s support helped her enter the athletic field and has continued to support her throughout her competitions and sports journey.

Inhphom credits her success not only to her family but also to her teammates and coaches.

“Having people who believe in you makes a huge difference. When I’m having a bad day or feel overwhelmed, my teammates remind me why I love what I do.”

Even with all the time she dedicates to athletics, Inhphom still finds ways to express herself outside the field.

However, Inhphom did not just stop at sports; she’s also in band.

After years of focusing on athletics, Inhphom wanted to explore another side of herself. One that allowed time for creativity and expression. That’s when she found her passion for music and joined band.

For Inhphom, music became more of an extracurricular; it became a space for her to relax. “Band is where I can slow down for a moment,” She said. “When I’m playing, I don’t have to worry about times, scores, or training. It feels calming.”

Just as Inhphom began to find her rhythm in sports, she realized something was missing.

The competitiveness of athletics fulfilled her drive, but she longed for a creative outlet. This allowed herself beyond physical endurance.

Balancing both sports and band is no easy task. Between early morning practices for cross country and late-night rehearsals for band. Inhphom often finds herself with little time to rest.

Marching at football games after a long day of athletic training can be exhausting both mentally and physically.

Keeping up with different coaches, teammates, and directors requires organization and perseverance.

Still, Inhphom manages to push through, showing her dedication to everything she is involved in.

“I like how everyone works together to create something bigger than ourselves. It’s a different form of teamwork compared to sports, but it’s just as rewarding.”

Inhphom has been pursuing the arts for the majority of her high school career. She joined the band during her sophomore year and has been in band for three years.

Her ability to succeed in both areas of sport and band shows how discipline, balance, and passion can lead to personal growth and pride.

When asked about what upcoming events/competitions Inhphom is most excited for, she said. “Some events and or competitions I’m excited for are just my senior nights for my sports and getting to experience my last year in high school.”

Inhphom’s journey shows that with hard work and determination, it’s possible to succeed in multiple passions and make the most of every opportunity high school has to offer.

As Inhphom prepares to graduate, she looks back at her high school years with gratitude for every challenge and experience that helped her grow into the dedicated and well-rounded student she is today.

Looking ahead, Inhphom hopes to continue both athletics and music after graduation.

“I don’t want to give up either, sports keep me grounded, and music keeps me creative. They both influenced who I am today.”

Her story serves as a reminder that students don’t have to choose just one path; with balance and determination, they can pursue multiple dreams simultaneously.

Inhphom hopes her journey will inspire students at Redwood to explore more than one interest.

As Inhphom prepares for her journey beyond Redwood, she carries with her lessons learned from both the field and band room.

Throughout her high school career, she developed discipline, creativity, resilience, and a deep appreciation for all the challenges she’s faced along the way.

Her story serves as a reminder that high school is about discovering the many passions that shape who we become.

For Inhphom, balancing her band and sports has never just been a matter of her schedule.

It’s been a way of growing and learning, and defining who she truly is.

“You don’t have to be a ‘sports kid’ or ‘band kid, you can be both, you can be more. High school is the perfect time to try everything.”
