COVID-19 has life on pause. Teachers and students have not been able to be in the classroom since March 13, 2020. This has left many students to miss their teachers and vice versa. One of these teachers is the auto shop teacher at Redwood High School, Mr. Cox.

Auto shop students don’t just miss being with their friends, but they miss being able to physically take things apart and put them back together. However, Redwood students that were into the automotive industry decided not to let COVID-19 stop them from learning.

Larry Nelms, ‘22, is a student at Redwood High School and has been a part of the auto shop for 4 years. Larry has a 2002 Chevy Silverado that he has been using for school and to get around. Larry knows his truck is a little old, but in his opinion, putting time and a little bit of money into his truck has been worth it. Nelms said, “I know my truck is a little old, but it’s mine. Saving money is important and all I need is time and effort for it to keep running perfectly”.

Nelms has no problem with his being old. It is almost 18 years old, but he loves it too much. He would rather use some of his time to get his truck perfect, instead of wasting a lot of money on a new car.

Using some money and time, Nelms has added tinted windows and a sound system during this pandemic.

During this pandemic, Nelms has also worked on other cars. Working on cars is something he has a passion for. Even with the fear of the pandemic, “I feel like COVID-19 has ruined everything and has put in a lot of fear to others, even myself. But it won’t stop me from learning more and putting more hard work into my truck.”

COVID-19 does have a lot of things on pause but that does not bother Nelms.
