Many people nowadays use artificial intelligence for anything, whether it’s for school work, advertising, technology, art, etc. But how do real artists feel about AI art?
Mr. Steven Harris, known as the studio arts teacher at RHS shares the pros of AI art.
Harris said, “It’s a great tool, it’s really great for brainstorming because you can try out a whole bunch of different ideas.”
Harris claims it’s not a problem to spot AI art because, “at this point, the eyes are always messed up, the hands are always messed up. What AI does is, it doesn’t do art.”
Harris then explains what exactly AI does to create art: “It goes out and searches millions of images based upon what verbal request you have. Then, it compiles the images from many different sources, combines them, and blurs them together into a picture.”
Harris said, “It’s not art, you can’t just say ‘Oh I clicked a button and made art.’ It’s a tool for making art.”
Although Harris makes it clear that AI is not capable of making art, he thinks it’s still pretty fascinating.
Harris uses AI in his class to animate his student’s self portraits.
Harris shares the cons of AI art. Harris said, “It’s boring. It’s not art, it will never replace traditional art because it can never fully express what a human being is trying to express.”
