This year’s American Music Awards, that occurred on October 9th, 2018 and able to watch the day of at 5:00 PM PDT on ABC channel, became a highlight of the entertainment world overnight. Many big-named celebrities and artists attended to perform and receive an award(s).
The AMA’s is the largest fan-voted awards show in the world, which allowed fans to see their favorite artists win the award they voted for. Taylor Swift was the focus of the night because she won the most awards, which prompted her to surpass the previous record of being the female artist with the most wins set by Whitney Houston. Swift won 4 awards in total which were, “Artist of the Year”, “Tour of the Year”, “Favorite Female Artist pop/rock”, and “Favorite Album pop/rock”.
Other artists with numerous wins also included Camila Cabello and Young Thug that won three awards for their collaboration of “Havana”, rapper Cardi B totaled with three awards, and Post Malone with two. Many popular artists of this generation also won a few awards including K-pop group BTS that won “Favorite Social Artist” and Shawn Mendes with “Favorite Artist – Adult Contemporary”.
Focusing on the performances, Taylor Swift claimed her significant role once again by being the opening with her track “I Did Something Bad”. Other performers that were highly anticipated included Cardi B because it was her first post-pregnancy awards show gig, popular singer Shawn Mendes, and the well-known Mariah Carey. There were many other amazing performances done by Jennifer Lopez, Carrie Underwood, Ciara and Missy Elliott, Dua Lipa, Ella Mai, Benny Blanco with Halsey and Khalid, Camila Cabello, Panic! At The Disco, Post Malone and Ty Dolla $ign, Zedd and Twenty One Pilots.
The awards show did not forget to include a special tribute to Aretha Franklin. A lineup of soul and gospel artists introduced this beautiful tribute. The lineup consisted of Mary Mary, Gladys Knight, Ledisi, Donnie McClurkin and CeCe Winans.
The 2018 American Music Awards was overall a success for both the artists and the audience or viewers. The awards show honored many influential and iconic artists, while also providing flashy performances.
