Here at Redwood High School there are many smart students but many of them include seniors who do go through a common term called “senioritis” and has been something that teachers as well as parents try and prevent in order for their seniors to not slack in there last year of High School.
Having senioritis also has very big consequences as it can affect your school life and your social life.
Getting good grades all school year then letting senioritis affect you towards the end of the year can affect your leadership and leave big gaps in your extracurricular activities.
Once you let a drop in motivation and effort in school, that also can get colleges to reconsider your acceptance.
According to ACT, “Some students have had their admissions offers revoked, and others have lost scholarships they were counting on because of a slide in their performance.”
When students attempt to avoid academic decline as much as they can, students are able to accomplish a lot more throughout their senior year.
Although many senior high school students are ready to get their year over with, students should still set goals for themselves. Having a path to follow and avoiding the common phenomena of a drop in productivity and drive that senior students experience is the key to surviving senior year against senioritis.
Setting goals for your senior year can help in a lot of ways, it can help stay on top of your work and classes, it can also help with your personal life especially if your in sports.
Setting goals can also just help students stay on track with daily life and school so that there is no worry about going back and forth.
Some goals you can set for yourself:
1. Challenge yourself
2. Get or stay involved in school activities
3. Set academic and personal goals
4. Commit to life long learning
5. Don’t forget to enjoy your senior year
Athletes are a big percentage of students who end up getting drained at a quicker rate, Yain Garcia-Cervantes ’27 a varsity football player said, “I will absolutely get senioritis but jokes aside, I am doing everything as of right now and keeping up with my education and sports.”
Cervantes has always been a great student, he has always been on top of his work, and extracurricular activities.
Aside from the cons of senior year, Cervantes said, “An accomplishment that I have achieved is being more open minded about not just how I feel, but the way others feel. I carry this on to everything in my life including football.”
If Cervantes lets senioritis catch up to him, that can affect him and the sports he loves to do, he said, “I want to end my senior year with memories, great achievements and no regrets.”
Kane Romero ‘27 another varsity football player said, “I think I will get senioritis after the football season ends, I only come to school because I have to but right now I am trying to stay on top of my work for football so I can end my senior year with no bad grades.”
For Romero, staying focused in school is about more than just getting through his senior year. He wants to keep his grades up while balancing the needs of football all while making the most of his final year at Redwood.
Something Romero says he has been achieving is “better grades and becoming a better person than [he] was last year in every way.”
Romero explains that he is a student who is very consistent with football.
If he were to let senioritis affect him during his football season, he will not be able to continue playing with the team he loves most.
Romero said, “I am looking forward to graduating with all my friends and enjoying my senior year, I wanna enjoy my senior year knowing I achieved all my goals for myself and for football.”
Noel Gonzalez ‘27 is a senior here at Redwood High school he said, “ I feel like I already have senioritis by trying to balance my school work and football at the same time.”
With football and school taking up most of his time, Gonzalez is trying to stay on top of his work while enjoying his senior year.
Gonzalez said, “I’m trying to avoid senioritis as best as possible because I do feel like I’m already getting senioritis and that’s not something I wanna worry about in my last year of high school.”
Some of the things Gonzalez says he is achieving is “maintaining [his] work as best as [he] can, getting wins for football, and making sure [he’s] on time to classes.”
Gonzalez said “I want to end my senior year with lots of memories with my teammates and my friends, I wanna end my last year of high school walking the stage with my friends and creating memories with all of them.”
