Redwood High School welcomes the class of 2030 with many new athletes from different sports.

Freshmen have to be at practice at certain times, which comes with struggles in trying to find time to do schoolwork or study.

Many students wonder how athletes are able to keep up with practices, games, etc along with maintaining good grades at the same time.

Kendrix Almaguer, ‘30, said, “I love sports, but that’s not the 1st priority. I try to get things done promptly and on time, so I’m ready to play with no distractions.”

Almaguer plays on the Freshman Football team and just recently had his first game on Friday, August 21st, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and being a part of ASB.

High school is a huge transition from middle school; it becomes more competitive and stressful for athletes since the upperclassmen both have more skills and more experience.

Emma Alcantar, ‘30, said, “High school is more competitive because the older people I compete with have different kinds of skills.”

Balancing school and sports can be very challenging; being a part of a team in high school gives students [freshmen] a new beginning with opportunities to meet new people as well as making new experiences.

Yeshua Silva, ‘30, said, “It’ll make me a better person with the coaching and the brotherhood that we have on the field.”

For many freshmen athletes, they continue to grow and learn more skills as they improve their athletic abilities. It also gives them a chance to adjust to the new environment of high school as well as build new friendships.
