While Hollywood may portray a high schooler’s experience with a 20-year-old actor, if there is one thing they do get right, it is the awkward, thrilling, and memorable moments in school dances.

No matter your niche, high school dances can be a major event in anyone’s teenage experience, especially homecoming. That’s why some of the best coming-of-age movies have that one awkward, or exciting, school dance moment. As homecoming season rolls around, here are some movies worth watching to get in the spirit:

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Arguably, one of the best films to portray teenagers comes with a memorable homecoming scene. Originally a novel written by Stephen Chbosky, the film adaptation tells the story of observant and introverted Charlie Kemeckis’ journey through high school with the help of his two senior friends.

In the movie’s homecoming scene, Charlie can be seen glued to a wall observing the dance. He catches his friends in the audience, who perform their iconic dance routine to “Come on Eileen.” After that, Charlie gets the courage to get on the dance floor and join them.

This scene captures the nervousness many might feel to step out on the dance floor for the first time. It’s a reminder to let go of what others might think of you and just have fun with your friends, making it a noteworthy homecoming moment on film.

Spiderman: Homecoming

In between all the action and superhero battles, Spiderman: Homecoming captures a relatable homecoming night.

It’s heartwarming as we see Peter Parker nervously ask love interest Liz Toomes out to the Homecoming dance. Moments later, we see Peter prepare with his Aunt May for the dance by learning how to tie a tie, dance, and treat a lady. The night of the dance, Peter drives to Liz’s house and meets both of her parents, an awkward yet exciting scene.

In the end, Spiderman: Homecoming puts in mind that unexpected events can occur and that even our most special nights won’t always go according to plan, as he has to abruptly leave the dance. These scenes make the film even more enjoyable for students who know the nerves and excitement of preparing for a school dance.

The DUFF

Lastly, a fun, modern teen comedy, The DUFF captures the chaos and excitement that surround homecoming in high school. The story follows Bianca, a high school senior who discovers she has been labeled the “Designated Ugly Fat Friend” in her friend group. While she struggles with this new label, homecoming becomes a staple for her growth in confidence and self-acceptance.

The film highlights the pressure many teens feel to fit in before big school events. From finding the right dress to worrying about who to go with, The DUFF brings out the humor and relatability of homecoming season. By the end, Bianca shows that homecoming isn’t about labels or popularity, but about owning who you are and enjoying the night your own way.

All together, these films capture just how significant homecoming can feel in high school. As the season approaches, watching these movies is the perfect way to get excited, laugh at the awkwardness, and remember that no matter how the night turns out, it’s about enjoying the moment.
