Back in February of this year, kids around Tulare County submitted their artwork in hopes of winning a spot for the 2025 Tulare County Farm Bureau’s calendar art contest. Over in the art classes here at Redwood, Joselin Lara, ‘25, and Alexis Diaz de León, ‘27, submitted their pieces like many other artists, and they won a spot on the calendar!

The theme for this year’s art contest was the beauty of agriculture and the different roles people play in raising a farm. de León created this piece seen above. “The first thing I thought of was like a sheep in a field with fireflies, so that’s what I did,” de León says.

Lara relates her piece to the agriculture seen here in Visalia and bases her piece on the dairy farms. “I just thought of cows and stuff like that. There’s a lot of dairy farms in the area, so that’s what I used for inspiration,” Lara says.
For both Lara and de León, this was their first time entering an art competition like this. Despite their talent, they didn’t think they’d manage to get a place in the calendar.

de León says, “I was honestly surprised because I didn’t think it was that good. It was pretty cool.” She admits, “I didn’t even take a picture of it because I didn’t think it was good, like ‘this is terrible!’ But I guess it was fine.”
“Not going to lie, it took me like 40 minutes [to make]. I did it in one class period,” Lara says. However with de León, her piece took 3 days to create.
Both artists, regardless of how long it took, created beautiful pieces that allowed them to show their skill for all of Tulare County to see.
Lara says, “It was surprising, I didn’t expect to win. I think there was like almost 2,000 entries so I didn’t really expect it, but it was cool!”
