On March 30, 2022 the Visalia Unified School District (VUSD) ASB’s collectively canceled the annual ‘spring fling’ dance, attributing the decision to low ticket sales.

Hosting dances under Covid restrictions for the last two years has been impossible. VUSD’s first dance since the lockdown was the Winter Formal dance this in fall of 2021.

The spring semester dance, formerly known as Sadies, was to be hosted at Mt. Whitney High School on Saturday, April 2, 2022.

While the tickets went on sale district wide at all VUSD High Schools on March 28th, as of Wednesday, March 30, there had only been a total of 20 tickets sold, half of which were sold to Redwood High School students.

Redwood ASB Director, Hailey Aston says that the ASB classes for all four of the VUSD high schools have put in a lot of work for the dance but, “[she understands] why it was canceled,” when looking at the reasoning behind that.

Mrs. Aston however remains optimistic of the future by saying that this cancellation, “gives us an opportunity to push for prom and to make that as big and wonderful as we can.”

She says, “I’m bummed but I am hoping that we can kind of move all this momentum over to prom.”

Redwood ASB President Brielle Alvarez ‘22 explained that the committee would not have been able to make enough from ticket sales to cover the expenses of the dance.

When asked about the cancellation, Alvarez says, “it was a little sad to hear because all the schools already have been working so hard to put this dance together.”

Alvarez emphasized that the four ASB classes had been diligent in creating various decorations for this dance such as, “six foot basketball players and real life things that we were hoping to put into this dance.”

Gwyn Miller ‘25 was one of the Redwood students who had been looking forward to going to the dance.

Miller says that she hadn’t gone to a high school dance yet and was looking forward to this dance.

With this, Miller says that she too understands why the dance has been cancelled, saying, “with so few people going so it makes sense but it’s still kind of sad.”
